Former personal secretary to the late President Hussein Muhammad Ershad and chairman of the Hussein Muhammad Ershad Trust Major (retd) Khaled Akhtar has died of coronavirus in a hospital in the capital on Saturday morning.

MA Razzak Khan, social welfare secretary of Jatiya Party, confirmed the matter to The Business Post.

"Major (retd) Khaled Akhtar was infected with coronavirus a month ago. As his condition deteriorated, he was admitted to the capital's Combined Military Hospital. He later died in the ICU this morning around 6am," said Khan.

Khaled joined the army while studying Honors in English at Rajshahi University. He left the army in 1986 and joined the Jatiya Party.

Khaled, the son of Ershad's cousin Safayet Hossain, was appointed as the party chairman's private secretary. Then, he became the treasurer of the party and later a member of the presidium of the party.
