Evaly chairman, CEO face another lawsuit

Another lawsuit has been filed against Evaly Chief Executive Officer Mohammad Rassel and his wife Shamima Nasrin, the company’s chairman, on charges of money embezzlement.

Kamrul Islam, a businessman, filed the case with Dhanmondi police station on Friday, confirmed Officer-in-Charge of the police station Ekram Ali Mia.

According to the case statement, the businessman supplied goods worth Tk 35 lakh to the e-commerce platform’s Dhanmondi office, but Evaly did not pay his dues.

OC Ekram said the top two bosses of the company have been shown arrested in the case.

A court in Dhaka on Friday afternoon placed Rassel and Shamima on three-day remand each in a case of embezzling customers’ money through fraud.

Rapid Action Battalion apprehended the couple from their Mohammadpur residence on Thursday after a customer filed the fraud case against the couple with Gulshan police station that morning.

The Evaly CEO planned to declare bankruptcy if he failed to sell the company to an international or a big domestic organisation with liabilities, according to RAB.

During initial questioning, Rassel and Shamima said the company’s total debt stood at over Tk 1,000 crore, RAB’s Legal and Media Wing Director Commander Khandaker Al Moin told the media on Friday.

“Evaly has been a loss-making company since its inception. All expenses were met with customers’ money, leading to debt accumulation,” he said.

After the briefing, the battalion handed over the couple to police.
