A Dhaka court on Thursday granted interim bail to Dr Abul Kalam Azad, former director general of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), after he surrendered in a case filed over the Regent Hospital scam.

Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge KM Imrul Kayesh granted the bail after the former DG surrendered before the court and filed the bail petition.

The bail order will remain valid until November 2.

ACC Public Prosecutor Mir Abdus Salam told The Business Post that they presented strong argument against the bail.

“However, the court granted his bail till November 2 on the ground of his sickness,” he added.

Earlier on September 30, Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) submitted a charge sheet against six people, including the former director-general of Directorate General of Health Service (DGHS) Abul Kalam Azad in a case filed over embezzling government funds.

The rest of the accused are -- former DGHS director (Hospitals and Clinics) Dr Aminul Hasan, Deputy Director (Hospital-1) Dr Md Younus Ali, Assistant Director (Hospital-1) Dr Md Shafiur Rahman, and Research Officer Dr Md Didarul Islam.
