Ex-education minister Majeed Khan passes away

Former education and planning minister Dr A Majeed Khan died of old age complications while undergoing treatment at a city hospital on Wednesday.

He was 94, read a press release in Dhaka on Thursday.

Majeed Khan was serving as the president of the Executive Board of the Bangladesh Center for Communication Programs (BCCP) until his demise.

He dedicated his life to the cause of social development, particularly to expand education among the masses.

Born on July 1, 1929, in Faridpur, Dr Majeed was educated in Kolkata, London and Minnesota in the USA.

Throughout his life, he held several important positions at home and abroad.

Former education minister and planning minister Majeed Khan earlier served as ambassador of Bangladesh to France, Spain and Morocco. He was a senior director of UNDP and a member of the Executive Board and a permanent representative to UNESCO.

Dr Majeed founded Independent University Bangladesh (IUB) and was honoured as the president emeritus and founder president of IUB. He also established the first-ever IT-based university called the University of Information Technology and Sciences (UITS).

He established the Bangladesh Academy for Rural Development in Cumilla. He was the founder and chairperson of the Committee of Action for Research, Extension and Services (CARES).

His Namaz-e-Janaza will be held at the Baridhara Jame Mosque and Islamic Center after the Jumma prayers on Friday.
