A Dhaka court has sentenced Lutfozzaman Babar, who was the state minister for home affairs during the BNP-Jamaat regime, to eight-year imprisonment in a graft case filed against him for amassing illegal wealth.

Dhaka Special Judges Court-7 Judge Mohammad Shahidul Islam delivered the judgement in presence of the convict on Tuesday.

Earlier on October 4, the court set October 12 for pronouncing judgement as both the prosecution and the defence concluded their closing arguments in the case.

On January 13 in 2008, the Anti-Corruption Commission lodged the case against Babar with Ramna police station, for amassing illegal wealth of around Tk 7.05 crore.

On July 16, 2008, ACC Deputy Assistant Director Rupok Kumar Saha submitted a charge sheet in the case.

The court on August 12, 2008, indicted Babar in the graft case.

On May 28, 2007, Babar was arrested from his residence in the capital during the regime of caretaker government.

The former state minister was handed down death penalty in the 10-truck arms haul and August 21 grenade attack cases.
