Facebook has secret blacklist of individuals, organizations: Report

Facebook has a secret blacklist of 'dangerous individuals and organisations (DIO)', which includes 6 militant groups and one individual from Bangladesh, The Intercept reported Tuesday.

The Intercept reviewed a snapshot of the full DIO list and published a reproduction of the material in its entirety on Tuesday, with only minor redactions and edits to improve clarity.

The 6 Bangladeshi militant groups are Al-Mursalat Media, Ansarullah Bangla, Harakat ul-Jihad I Islami, Islamic State Bangladesh, Jamaat Ul Mujahideen Bangladesh and Saham al Hind Media. The listed individual is Tariqul Islam affiliated with Jamaat Ul Mujahideen.

The report said the restrictions appear to trace back to 2012, when in the face of growing alarm in Congress and the United Nations about online terrorist recruiting, Facebook added to its Community Standards a ban on “organizations with a record of terrorist or violent criminal activity.”

This modest rule has since ballooned into what’s known as the Dangerous Individuals and Organizations policy.

It is built atop a blacklist of over 4,000 people and groups, including politicians, writers, charities, hospitals, hundreds of music acts, and long-dead historical figures.
