A Dhaka court has rejected bail pleas and placed eight accused including the managing director of Regent Hospital Mizanur Rahman on two-day remand each in a case filed over issuing fake Covid-19 test certificates to 76 metro rail workers.
The seven other accused remanded are – Regent Hospital’s administrative official Ahsan Habib Hasan, health technician Ahsan Habib, health technologist Hatim Ali, Regent Group project’s administrative officials Md Rakibul Islam, Regent Group HR (admin) official Amit Banik, driver Abdus Salam, and hospital staff Abdur Rashid Khan Jewel.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Morshed Al Mamun Bhuiyan passed the order on Sunday after the investigation officer (IO) of the case produced them before the court with a seven-day remand plea on Saturday.
The court also rejected pleas filed by the defence lawyers seeking cancellation of remand.
In an earlier phase, a Dhaka court placed Mizanur Rahman on a ten-day remand on July 25 after he was arrested by police the previous day from Gopalganj.
On July 8, a Dhaka court placed seven other Regent Hospital employees on five-day remand each. Later, a 17-year-old accused was sent to Tongi Juvenile Correction Centre.
Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) on July 6 raided two hospitals of Regent Group in the capital’s Uttara and Mirpur and detained the eight for issuing fake Covid-19 test certificates by using forged serial number and signatures of concerned authorities, realizing illegal fees from the patients and moreover running hospital business without any proper approval.
RAB filed the case the next day against 17 people including Regent Group Chairman Md Shahed with Uttara Paschim Thana.
