Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization of United Nations (FAO) Dr Qu Dongyu congratulated Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on assuming office for the 4th consecutive term and lauded her dynamic leadership in ensuring food security in Bangladesh.

He emphasised that Bangladesh should take the advantages of South-South cooperation and strengthen relationships with South Asian and Central Asian countries.

DG FAO expressed the above complements Tuesday during the ceremony which marked presentation of Letter of Commission by Bangladesh Ambassador to Italy Md Monirul Islam accrediting him as the permanent representative of Bangladesh to FAO, read a press release.

Ambassador and PR Islam thanked DG Dr Dongyu for receiving the Commission and also for sharing his understandings on the achievements of Bangladesh in recent years, particularly in the areas of agriculture and food security.

He assured fullest support to the leadership of the DG to make the organization more efficient, transparent and inclusive.

Recognizing FAO’s valuable contribution in Bangladesh on food and nutrition security, food safety, agro environment, small holders farm productivity and income increase over the 45 years through various programmes and projects, Ambassador Islam expressed his appreciation to FAO for its support to materialize the transformation of agriculture through Country Programming Framework for Bangladesh 2022-2026.

The event held at FAO Headquarters, ended with reiteration of assurances by both Bangladesh and FAO to work together closely on “Leaving No One Behind” in the coming days to eradicate poverty and hunger.

Alternate Permanent Representative to FAO Md Al Amin, First Secretary (Political) Aysha Akter, First Secretary (Political) of Bangladesh Embassy in Rome Md Ashfaqur Rahman were present while the director general was accompanied by senior officials of the FAO.
