India opened all 109 gates of Farakka Barrage on Monday due to heavy downpour in the country’s Bihar and Jharkhand regions. But the move has not yet flooded any new regions inBangladesh, said adviser to the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief Farooq-e Azam.

Responding to questions from journalists about the flood situation and relief distribution at a press conference held at the Secretariat on Tuesday, he added, “The government is coordinating all the relief work.

“Efforts have been made to transport relief to all places where the water is receding. In many cases, the army and other forces are distributing relief through helicopters in more remote areas.”

Farooq added, “So far, relief has been sent to all remote upazilas. Relief has been stockpiled and medical services ensured at the upazila level. The relief work is progressing gradually, and emergency supplies have reached everywhere, even in remote areas.

“Water is receding in most regions. Areas that are newly flooded are expected to witness receding water levels quickly. We are capable of completing the relief activities properly. People's voluntary support and enthusiasm are giving us strength.”
