Farashuddin for steps to boost people’s earnings

Steps should be taken to boost the people’s earning capacity, as this will directly help alleviate poverty and inequality in the country, said former governor of Bangladesh Bank Dr Mohammed Farashuddin.

He added that industrialisation should be increased, as this will help increase employment and people’s income.

Dr Farashuddin made the remarks in his speech as chief guest at a discussion titled “Indomitable Bangladesh in Development Progress,” organised by Education Research and Development Forum (ERDFB) at the National Press Club on Saturday, read a press release.

The former chief of the central bank said, “I have seen in my research, that if the GDP growth is 10 per cent, and population growth is one per cent, then the national income doubles every seven years.

“We have to move forward with this goal in mind. Only then can we build a secular, prosperous and developed Bangladesh.”

ERDFB General Secretary Badruzzaman Bhuiyan said, “The war-torn Bangladesh that gained independence shedding blood of three million martyrs and the honor of two lakh women in 1971, will become the 29th and 23rd economically developed country in the world by 2030 and 2050, respectively.

“In 2026, Bangladesh will make its debut as a middle-income country, and in 2041, as a developed country.”

Bhuiyan added, “The big proof that Bangladesh is moving forward is the per capita income, which has increased over the past few years. Current per capita income is $2,765. Today, our beloved motherland is one of the top countries in the world in terms of economic progress.”

Inauguration of Metrorail and Padma Bridge are both examples of development milestones.

The government has a great role in the overall development of various sectors, including successfully dealing with Covid-19 pandemic, progress in the education system, communication infrastructure, gas, electricity supply etc.

Achievements also included 100 per cent increase in salaries and allowances of government employees, health care, distribution of free books, food production, support of backward communities under social safety net programs, assistance to financially weak freedom fighters.
