A Dhaka court on Monday (17 August) rejected a bail petition of Rashedul Haque Chisty, son of former Farmers Bank (now known as Padma Bank Ltd) Audit Committee Chairman Mahbubul Haque Chisty, in a money laundering case.
Judge KM Emrul Kayesh of the Senior Special Judge's Court of Dhaka passed the order today after the lawyer of the accused submitted a petition seeking bail in the case.
On December 5, 2019, a case was filed with the Integrated District Office-1 of Dhaka on charges of acquiring a non-taxation of 84,72,183 taka and concealing information of assets worth 2,52,82,685 taka.
Rashedul was shown arrested on July 5 as his involvement with the incident was found.
The Farmers Bank was established in June 2013. Later in 2017, Bangladesh Bank's investigators found massive irregularities in the bank's loan disbursement, along with a large number of default loans.
In February 2019, the bank was renamed to Padma Bank following the scandal to recover its image tarnished by all the irregularities and loan scams.
