Three patients died just after they were evacuated to safety during a fire at the intensive care unit (ICU) dedicated to Covid-19 treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) early Wednesday.
DMCH Director Brig Gen Nazmul Haque confirmed the matter to the media.
The fire originated around 8am, said Zia Rahman, an official of Fire Service and Civil Defence Headquarters.
On information, three units of firefighters rushed to the scene and doused the blaze.
The fire didn't spread much but caused heavy smoke, causing panic among the patients being treated there.
Patients were rescued breaking the windows of the ICU due to the dense smoke and moved from the coronavirus ICU unit safely, added Zia.
However, three of those patients died after they were evacuated to another ICU and the Burn unit High Dependency Unit (HDU) in the old building as their condition deteriorated said DMCH Director.
"The patients at the Covid-19 ICU were all in critical condition and under ventilation support," he added.
The deceased could not be identified immediately.
