Five people suffered burn injuries after a fire broke out at the gas line on Tipu Sultan Road in Dhaka’s Wari area early Wednesday.

The injured were identified as Md Sohail, 35, Suman alias Helal, 40, Abdur Rashid, 65, Md Mamun, 50, and Md Anwarul, 21.

They were under treatment at the Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn & Plastic Surgery.

Among them, Sohail's condition is very critical. 80 per cent of his body was burnt, resident surgeon of the hospital Tariqul Islam said, “10 per cent of Helal's body were burnt while 7 per cent of Rashid, 12 per cent of Mamun and 22 per cent of Anwarul were burnt.”

Monir Hossain, who brought the injured to the hospital, told reporters that excavation work was going on the road in front of a multi-storied under construction building on Tipu Sultan Road around 2.25am.

At this time, suddenly there was a huge explosion in the gas pipeline that caused a fire, Monir said.

“The fire broke out at the road around 2:25am. After informing the matter, five fire firefighting units rushed to the spot and extinguished the fire around 5:30am,” Deputy Assistant Director of Fire Service and Civil Defence Headquarters, Shahjahan Shikder said.
