Fire at Gazipur colony leaves couple, two others dead

Four people, including a couple, were burned to death in a fire at a colony in Palli Bidyut area in Kaliakoir upazila of Gazipur district early Monday.

Kabirul Alam, Station officer of Kaliakoir Fire Service and Control Room, said the fire broke out at the colony around 5:45am and spread soon, leaving four people dead and an identified number of people injured.

The identities of the deceased could not be known yet.

The fire burnt down nearly 50 tin-shed houses.

On information, a fire fighting unit rushed to the spot and extinguished the blaze.

The firefighters also recovered four charred bodies from the spot while putting out the blaze.

However, it is still not clear what caused the fire.

Fires at slums in Dhaka, home to many low-income people, are quite common and leave thousands of their residents homeless.

According to data compiled by Bangladesh Fire Service and Civil Defence, there were 174 fire incidents at slums in Dhaka, Chattogram and Rangpur last year.
