A fire broke out in Hotel Ambassador on KD Ghosh Road in Helatala intersection of Khulna city around 3:30am on Tuesday. It was brought under control after around four and a half hours of the day, said sources.
Md Faruk Hossain Sikdar, assistant director of Khulna Fire Service and Civil Defence (FSCD) department, confirmed the development saying that the fire started around 3:30am in the high-rise.
Being informed, eight firefighting units from four stations rushed to the spot and brought the fire under control around 8am, he said, adding that the fire is yet to be extinguished entirely.
Initially, it is assumed that fire erupted from a nearby shop and spread to the hotel building where several business establishments including Agrani Bank are located, he said.
Some 20 to 25 people were rescued from the fire-affected building as the hotel’s stairs and lifts were closed, the fire service official said, adding that the extent of damages caused by the fire could not be known immediately.
