The fire that broke out at a cotton warehouse in Sitakunda upazila of Chattogram on Saturday morning was extinguished on Sunday afternoon, 30 hours after the incident.

Chattogram Fire Service and Civil Defence Deputy Director Abdul Halim said the blaze was put out around 4:50pm. “Despite this, a firefighting unit was still kept at the spot as a precautionary measure.”

Earlier in the day, Chattogram district administration Senior Assistant Commissioner and Executive Magistrate Md Towhidul Islam had said the fire was brought under control by the combined efforts of 23 units of the Fire Service, Bangladesh Army, Bangladesh Navy, Bangladesh Air Force, and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) around 7am.

According to the initial estimation, sparks from welding might have caused the fire, he added.

Around 10:30am on Saturday, the fire started at the cotton warehouse of Unitex Group in front of the Namson Container Depot in the Chhoto Kumira area.

Meanwhile, a 10-member probe committee has been formed to investigate the fire and asked to submit a report within five working days.

On March 4, a horrific blast took place at a plant in Sheema Oxygen Ltd in Sitakunda, leaving seven people dead and more than 30 others injured.
