An inmate at the Sylhet Central Jail died of Covid-19 while undergoing treatment at the isolation centre of Sylhet Shaheed Shamsuddin Hospital on Sunday.
He was the first prisoner in Bangladesh to die from novel coronavirus.
Dr Anisur Rahman, Assistant Director of Sylhet Divisional Health Directorate, confirmed the matter to The Business Post, adding that the prisoner's sample, examined at PCR lab of Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital, tested positive on Monday.
The man hailed from Kanaighat upazila in Sylhet and was in jail since March 5 accused in a murder charge, according to a Sylhet Central Jail source.
