Fish and chicken prices came down last week as the demand for these essentials has suddenly decreased before Eid-ul Adha.
The price of chicken has come down by Tk 20-Tk 30 per kg and the prices of all kinds of fish have also come down in a week.
However, there is no difference in the price of vegetables. All kinds of vegetables are being sold at higher prices as before.
While visiting various markets in the capital on Friday, it has been found that in these markets, broilers are being sold at Tk 130 to Tk 135 per kg, down by Tk 10 to Tk 15 per kg in a week. Red layer chicken is being sold at Tk 200 per kg with a reduction of Tk 20 to Tk 30 per kg and white layer chicken is being sold at Tk 180/kg with a reduction of Tk 20/kg.
Besides, ‘sonali’ variety of chicken is being sold at Tk 240/kg to Tk 260/kg less and domestic chicken is being sold at Tk 550- Tk 560 per kg.
In the Kaptan Bazar of the capital, a chicken trader named Md Harun told The Business Post that the supply of chicken in the market has increased over the past two weeks. Besides, the demand for chicken decreases all the time before Eid. This time too it has happened. As a result, the prices of chickens have come down considerably.
Meanwhile, the prices of beef and mutton have also come down. At present, beef is being sold at Tk 550 per kg in the market. Mutton is being sold at Tk 750-780 per kg. However, the duck is being sold at the previous price.
The prices of all types of fish have also come down this week as compared to last week. The prices of different types of small fish have come down by Tk 20-Tk30 per kg and the price of big fish has come down by Tk 30-50 per kg. The supply of hilsa has further increased. As a result, the price of hilsa has also come down a bit.
Yusuf Ali, a fishmonger in Karwanbazar, told The Business Post that a lot of fish was being caught in different parts of the country due to the monsoon. The supply of fish is much higher now than before. Along with other fish, hilsa has also come to the market a lot. So the price has come down a bit.
However, the prices of eggs have remained unchanged. In these markets, every dozen red eggs of farms are being sold at Tk 105 to Tk110, local chicken eggs at Tk 150 to 160 and duck eggs at Tk 125 to Tk 130.
The prices of most vegetables also remained unchanged. Vegetables and green chili are being sold at higher prices as before. Depending on the market, per kilogram of asparagus bean is being sold at Tk 60-70, snake gourd at Tk 50-60, green papaya at Tk 50-60, pointed gourd at Tk 50, balsam apple at Tk 70-80, ridge gourd at Tk 50-60, arum at Tk 40-60 and sweet gourd at Tk 50-60. And a kg of potato is being sold at Tk 32- Tk35.
Besides, ripe tomatoes are being sold at Tk 100-120 per kg, carrots at Tk 60-100 per kg and cucumbers at Tk 50-60 per kg. And a kg of green chilli is being sold at Tk 120-160.
Faruk Hossain, a buyer at Mohammadpur Town Hall Kitchen Market, told The Business Post that vegetables are now more expensive compared to fish and meat. Vendors are charging higher prices for all vegetables due to rains and floods. In fact, they are doing whatever they want because there is no one to watch them.
