The low-lying and haor areas of 13 unions in Gowainghat upazila were inundated on Wednesday due to flash floods prompted by heavy rainfall and an onrush of upstream water.

Salutikor-Gowainghat road went underwater, snapping communication with Goainghat Upazila headquarters.

Two points on the Sarighat-Gowainghat road and Shimultola point of the Gowainghat-Radhanagar-Jaglong road were also submerged.

Besides, hundreds of people were stranded in haor areas.

Rustampur, Lengura, Doubari, Nandirgaon Union, East and West Alirgaon, and West Jaflong areas also flooded.

According to the sources at the Water Development Board, the water of the Sari River was flowing above the danger level at the Gowainghat Point and the Sarighat Point.

However, the local administration also asked people in the flood-hit areas to relocate to safer places with their belongings.

Touhidul Islam, Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) of Gowainghat Upazila, said already 56 shelter centres have been prepared in 13 unions and the people in risky areas have been asked to move to shelters.
