Flood washes away spur dam in Teesta

Around 30 metres of the flood control spur dam in the Teesta River at Burirhat in Rajarhat upazila of Kurigram have been washed away as flood situation worsened in the district.

Rivers in the district including Teesta keep swelling due to onrush of water from the upstream and incessant heavy rainfall, flooding low-lying areas in Rajarhat upazila.

The Teesta was flowing 30cm above its danger level at Kawniya rail bridge point on Sunday morning. It crossed the danger level on Friday.

Besides, 50 houses went into the gorge of the river and 500 houses were inundated by floodwater in Bidyanondo and Ghorialdanga unions of Rajarhat upazila.

Many roads went under floodwater that snapped road communication in the two unions, said members of the two union parishads. 

Two government primary schools and a bazar in Bidyanondo union is facing erosion threat.

Md Minhajul, a member of Ghorialdanga union parishad, said around 200 houses and other establishments were inundated by the floodwater.

Abul Kashem of Kisamat Nakonda area told the UNB correspondent that 45 out of 75 houses in his village were flooded.

Flood-affected people of different areas shared their sufferings with the correspondent and sought help from the government.

Nure Tasnim, Rajarhat upazila nirbahi officer, said he has so far received a list of 20 flood-hit people and allocated dry food for 50 families.

Moreover, 1.5 tonnes of rice were allocated for the erosion and flood-affected people, he said.

Islam, additional deputy commissioner of the district, said they were monitoring the situation and had stock of sufficient relief for the affected people.
