Former DG of BSTI Dr Aziz dies

Former director general of Bangladesh Standard & Testing Institute (BSTI) Dr Azizur Rahman passed away on Saturday.

He breathed his last at 8:30pm at the Evercare Hospital in Dhaka, his family said. He was 83.

Dr Aziz’s namaz-e-janaza was held at Uttara sector six Eidgah, and was later laid to rest at the Mirpur Intellectual Graveyard.

Survived by wife, three sons and two daughters, Dr Aziz was the elder brother of former minister and Dhaka City Corporation Mayor Naziur Rahman Monzur.

Dr Aziz, who hailed from Bhola, was a pioneer in developing jute pulp technology in Bangladesh, and also served as director of BCIC (Bangladesh Chemical Industries Corporation).

Aside from being the founding director of Bangladesh Energy Monitoring Unit, he also served as the managing director of Karnaphuli Paper Mills, Zia Fertiliser Factory and Sylhet Pulp & Paper Mills.

Dr Aziz initiated his career as the research officer of the BCSIR (Bangladesh Council of Scientific & Industrial Research), and worked with renowned educationist and chemist Kudrat e Khuda as a researcher

He completed his PhD from Leeds University and higher management studies at Oxford University of the UK. He was a Colombo Plan Scholar.
