The freedom of media should be fully ensured to make more investigative reports for building good governance in society, speakers said on Tuesday.

They made the remarks at a programme titled, "Role of journalists in promoting governance of social protection programmes (SPPS)" at the Economic Reporters Forum (ERF) auditorium in the capital.

WAVE Foundation, a private development organization, in coordination with The Asia Foundation organised the event.

"We noticed a lot of irregularities, corruption, nepotism, political muscles in the last several years in the country which are key barriers to build a good governance, and ensure people rights," Associate Professor of Jahangirnagar University’s Journalism and Media Studies department Rakib Ahmed said.

He added that the state must ensure the protection of freedom for journalists to establish justice in society. “It is the state's responsibility”.

WAVE Foundation Coordinator Aniruddha Roy said “The government has taken a lot of social safety net programmes but these are not implemented properly due to lack of mismanagement and corruption.

"There are 99 social safety net programmes of 21 ministries in the country. Media can play a significant role to bring transparency here.”

Executive Director of WAVE Foundation Mohsin Ali gave a welcome speech while ERF General Secretary S M Rashidul Islam spoke there.

Assistant Director of WAVE Foundation Kaniz Fatima and its project coordinator Nirmal Das among others were also present there.
