Fugitive life-term convicted war criminal held in city

Anti-Terrorism Unit (ATU) on Tuesday night arrested fugitive life-term convicted war criminal Md Fakhruzzaman, 66, conducting a secret operation from the South Goran area of the city's Khilgaon.

The accused Md Fakhruzzaman is the son of deceased Abdul Waheed, a resident of the College road area of Kotwali police station in Mymensingh district, said an ATU press release.

On May 19, 2015, Rahima Khatun, wife of martyred freedom fighter Abdur Rahman of Trishal upazila, filed a case against three in Mymensingh court. The judge accepted and ordered the case to be sent to the International Crimes Tribunal in Dhaka.

On October 10, 2015, the International Crimes Tribunal issued an arrest warrant against the accused for committing crimes against humanity in 1971. Fakhruzzaman went into hiding after filing the case, it said.

On February 20 this year, a three-member bench led by International Crimes Tribunal Chairman Justice MD Shahinur Islam and comprising Justice Abu Ahmed Jamadar and Justice KM Hafizul Alam sentenced Fakhruzzaman to life imprisonment for kidnapping, murdering and concealing the body of renowned sculptor Abdur Rashid of Mymensingh.

The arrested war criminal has been handed over to Mymensingh's Kotwali Model Police Station, the release added.
