Students, as part of their movement demanding reform in quota for government jobs, will organise funeral and coffin processions at the Dhaka University (DU) campus on Wednesday over the death of students in clashes with the police and Chhatra League.

Boisommo Birodhi Chatro Andolon DU Coordinator Asif Mahmud said last night, “Funeral and coffin processions will be held at the foot of Raju sculpture at 2pm on Wednesday for the martyred brothers in the attacks and shootings.

“We will observe funeral and coffin processions in all educational institutions and districts. Everyone staying in Dhaka will come to the foot of Raju sculpture to hold the demonstration.”

The ongoing quota reform movement turned violent on Tuesday. At least six people died in clashes at different places. Hundreds of protesting students and Chhatra League leaders were injured.

In this situation, considering the safety of the students, the University Grants Commission (UGC) ordered the closure of the educational activities in all public and private universities and affiliated colleges for an indefinite period.

At the same time, the National University has also announced the closure of all its colleges. Students have already started leaving their dormitories.

Apart from this, all secondary and higher secondary level educational institutions and polytechnic institutes across the country have been declared shut for an indefinite period.

The Ministry of Education gave the instruction in a circular on Tuesday evening.
