A gate-lock system for public buses has come into effect from Sunday in a bid to reduce traffic jams. The initiative is being launched from the city’s Mohakhali Bus Terminal.

The Gulshan Department of Traffic confirmed the matter in a Facebook post on Saturday night.

The post mentions that buses will depart from Mohakhali bus stand and take passengers to their respective destinations first from Kakoli, then Kurmitola, Khilkhet and finally Abdullahpur.

Strict legal action will be taken against public transportations that violate this rule, and stop to pick up commuters outside the designated stops.

Commuters have also been instructed not to board any buses outside the designated stops. It is also mentioned in the post that all the stakeholders in the transportation sector have assured full cooperation in this regard.

It should be noted that the gridlock crisis in Dhaka remains persistent despite the introduction of flyovers, metro rail and the elevated expressway.
