Industries Minister Nurul Majid Mahmud Humayun on Saturday said that the newly established Ghorasal Polash Urea Fertilizer Project (GPUFP) is currently operating at 100 per cent production capacity, with fertiliser production ongoing according to set targets.

“This achievement was possible due to the joint effort between Bangladesh Chemical Industries Corporation (BCIC) under the Ministry of Industries, and contractors Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd (MHI) of Japan and CC-7 of China,” he said.

The minister made these remarks while briefing journalists at the Ghorashal Polash Urea Fertilizer Factory's VIP guest house following his inspection of the GPUFP.

Humayun stated, "This factory, one of the largest in Asia, was established following Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s directives and meets the expectations of the people in my constituency of Narsingdi."

"The full operation of the factory has significantly reduced Bangladesh's need for fertiliser imports, saving foreign exchange and alleviating fertiliser shortages in the agriculture sector,” he continued.

“Additionally, it has created 30,000 new jobs, contributing positively to the nation's agricultural production, economy, trade and commerce," he added.

The industries minister announced, "We have plans to establish two more fertiliser factories in Bhola and Ashuganj to further boost fertiliser production in our agriculture-dependent country."

"The government is making maximum efforts to increase fertiliser production. With the optimal operation of our existing factories, the country would no longer need to import fertiliser and could even export it," he said.

During his visit, the minister inspected the factory's bulk storage and packaging units, providing guidance and recommendations to ensure regular production and monitoring of the environmentally friendly, energy-efficient and technologically advanced urea factory.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the Ghorasal Polash Urea Fertilizer Factory on 12 November 2023 in Palash Upazila of Narsingdi. The factory, the largest of its kind in Southeast Asia, was constructed on 110 acres at a cost of Tk 15,500 crore, with a daily production capacity of 2,800 tonnes and an annual capacity of 9,24,000 tonnes.

Narsingdi-2 Constituency Member of Parliament (MP) Anwarul Ashraf Khan, Reserved Women Constituency MP Masuda Siddique Rozy, Industries Ministry Senior Secretary Zakia Sultana, BCIC Chairman Md Saidur Rahman, Industries Ministry Additional Secretary Md. Shamimul Haque, GPUFP Project Director Md Saidur Rahman, MHI Project Director Hirotesi Suzuki and Project Manager Yuichi Saima were also present among others.
