Golden jubilee of Jatiya Sangsad to be celebrated April 7

The golden jubilee of the Jatiya Sangsad will be celebrated on April 7 in a befitting manner.

The Jatiya Sangsad, under the leadership of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, started its journey on April 7, 1973. Bangabandhu was the leader of the first parliament.

The first session of parliament was held at the then Sangsad Bhaban at Tejgaon in Dhaka. Fifty years of the House will be completed on April 7 this year.

The general election of 300 seats of the Jatiya Sangsad was held on March 7, 1973. The number of women reserved seats was 15 meaning the total number of members of parliament was 315.

Mohammad Mohammadullah became the first speaker while Mohammad Baitullah became the deputy speaker of parliament.

Afterwards, Mohammad Mohammadullah became president of Bangladesh and Abdul Maleque Ukil was elected speaker.

The 11th Jatiya Sangsad will go into the 22nd session on April 6. This will also be a special session of parliament to mark Bangladesh Jatiya Sangsad's 50th anniversary.

President Md Abdul Hamid convened the session exercising the power bestowed upon him by Article 72 (1) of the constitution.

The session, second session of this year, will begin at 11am on April 6.

The president is scheduled to deliver a speech at the special session.

According to the constitution, the president must convene a session within 60 days of the last sitting of the previous session. The last session of parliament was prorogued on February 9.

Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban is located at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in the city. Architect Louis Kahn designed the complex of Jatiya Sangsad, which is one of the largest legislative complexes in the world, covering 215 acres.
