The Ministry of Food has given its green signal to import 16.93 lakh tonnes of rice through 415 private importers, under six conditions, in a bid to control its price in the domestic market.
The imported rice will enter the country by September 25, a senior food ministry official told The Business Post on Monday.
At present, the price of rice per tonne in the international market is between $350 and $386.
According to the ministry, the price of imported rice in the local market will remain between Tk 32.5 and Tk 38.15, after paying customs duty and other taxes.
The ministry officials said that all kinds of imported rice would not be sold above Tk 40 in the domestic market.
