Govt begins paddy procurement directly from farmers

The government has started procurement of paddy directly from farmers at Tk 27 per kg under the Boro Collection programme this year.

Food Minister Sadhan Chandra Majumder inaugurated the countrywide Boro Collection programme through a videoconference from Dhaka on Wednesday.

Among other stakeholders, government administrational officials from nine districts -- Netrakona, Kishoreganj, Naogaon, Bogura, Dinajpur, Sylhet Sadar, Habiganj, Moulvibazar and Sunamganj -- joined the programme virtually.

According to the ministry, the food department will collect 6.50 lakh metric tonnes of paddy directly from farmers at Tk 27 per kg. It also fixed a target to collect 10 lakh metric tonnes of boiled rice at Tk 40 per kg and 1.5 lakh metric tonnes of non-boiled rice at Tk 39 per kg under the Boro Collection programme.
