State Minister for Public Administration Farhad Hossain has said the government may announce a nationwide strict shutdown at any time.
The minister said this after the National Technical Advisory Committee on Covid-19 recommended enforcing a minimum of a 14-day complete countrywide shutdown to curb the increasingly deteriorating Covid situation in the country.
The committee's recommendation is reasonable and the government is prepared for a nationwide shutdown, for which an announcement may come at any time, the minister told the media.
At the meeting of NTAC on June 23, chaired by committee chief Prof Dr Mohammad Shahidullah, the committee suggested allowing only the emergency services to operate during the shutdown period.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh on Thursday recorded 6,058 coronavirus cases, the highest in nearly two and a half months. The health authorities also registered 81 deaths, according to the Directorate General of Health Services.
The local death tally now stands at 13,868 as the number of confirmed cases soar to 8,72,935. The mortality rate remains at 1.59 per cent.
