Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader on Saturday said the government is considering the resumption of public transport operations across the country as the two-week strict lockdown is nearly coming to its end.
The minister said this at a view exchange meeting with officials of Barishal Road Zone, BRTC and BRTA.
Once the decision comes, public transport operators must follow the health guidelines in continuing their services, he said.
Legal action will be taken if anyone is found charging passengers extra fare, he warned.
On March 31, the government announced that buses and minibuses are to charge 60 percent more than the existing fare on the condition that they would carry 50 percent of passengers of their capacities and maintain necessary health safety guidelines.
The government imposed a 'loose' nationwide lockdown for one week from April 5 as part of its move to contain the spike in both coronavirus infections and fatalities.
After a weeklong lockdown, the government enforced a fresh one with harsher measures by closing all shops and markets across the country from April 14 to April 21. Later, the lockdown was extended for another week till April 28.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh registered 88 Covid-19 deaths in 24 hours till 8:00 am on Friday, taking its tally to 10,869.
Besides, 3,629 people tested positive in the 24 hours, bringing the total number of infections to 7,39,703.
