The government is working sincerely to control the rise in commodity prices, said AHM Shafiquzzaman, director general (DG) of Department of National Consumer Rights Protection (DNCRP) at a shadow parliament organised by the Debate for Democracy, a non-profit organisation promoting democratic values and civic engagement in Bangladesh.

“The government is prioritising trade policy and that Bangladesh will not become Sri Lanka or Venezuela and it is working to enhance the use of digital technology to ensure good governance in market management,” the DNCRP chief made the remarks at a shadow parliament on the topic of controlling commodity prices and the government’s main challenges, held at the Bangladesh Film Development Corporation (BFDC) in Dhaka on Friday.

Hassan Ahamed Chowdhury Kiron, chairman of Debate for Democracy, presided over the event and opined that the rise in commodity prices is making life difficult for people, especially the poor and middle class. He called for tough measures against dishonest traders and businessmen, reads a press release.

Kiron told that the government faces several other challenges besides controlling commodity prices, including maintaining order in the political, diplomatic, and economic sectors, preventing money laundering, fighting corruption, repaying foreign debt, dealing with the fuel crisis, and filling the reserve deficit.

He believes that in order to face all these challenges, it is important to build agreement among all political parties so that people can have faith in the government.

The shadow parliament was won by the debaters of Prime University, who defeated the debaters of Chattogram Maa-O-Shishu Hospital. Trophies and certificates were awarded to the winning team.
