The law ministry on Sunday rejected the appeal of family members of Bangladesh Nationalist Party chairperson Khaleda Zia to take her abroad for better treatment.
Confirming the matter, law minister Anisul Huq told The Business Post, “The appeal was rejected as Khaleda’s family previously made an application to facilitate her getting treatment at home by suspending jail term. The matter is resolved and we cannot reopen that application. The matter is not relevant as the law does not permit us to allow her to go abroad on the same application.”
The minister also said that the government suspended Khaleda’s jail term in line with section 104 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.
Earlier, Shamim Eskander, younger brother of Khaleda Zia, on May 5 applied to the government seeking approval for taking her abroad for better treatment.
Khaleda is now undergoing treatment at Evercare hospital after being contacted with Covid-19.
Khaleda was admitted to Evercare Hospital on the night of April 27 for diagnosis after being tested positive for Covid-19 for the second time on April 24 although she was tested Covid positive first on April 11.
On May 3, Khaleda was shifted to the Coronary Care Unit of the hospital with breathing problems and some old age complications like arthritis, diabetes and eye problems.
