Fisheries and Livestock Minister SM Rezaul Karim on Saturday said the government will organise a fish festival to attract foreign buyers.

The minister said a demand for Bangladeshi fish abroad has already been created and the government will host a festival soon where representatives from more than 20 countries will participate.

The minister came up with the information while virtually speaking at a workshop on the current status, prospects and future actions of fisheries resources of Chattogram Division. The workshop was held at the fisheries training centre in Cumilla.

Director General of the Directorate of Fisheries Khondoker Mahbubul Haque and senior officials also spoke at the workshop with Fisheries and Livestock Secretary Dr Nahid Rashid in the chair.

The minister said Bangladeshi fish have earned acceptance in the export market.

However, some unscrupulous traders get caught in adulteration of fish.

“The government will take a strict stand against such acts,” he said adding that the government will also encourage and patronise those who do well in exporting fish.

He also said a project on the conservation and management of natural fish breeding grounds in Halda River is under process.

Noting that Halda River plays an important role in increasing the production of carp fish, he said: "Our project for Halda River is under process. It will be approved soon. Through this project, the government is working to make Halda more up-to-date by maintaining the natural balance."
