Cabinet Committee on Public Procurement has approved the purchase of 80,000 metric tons of urea fertilizer at a cost of 174.84 crore taka.
The purchase proposal was approved at the 32nd meeting of the virtual cabinet committee on government, chaired by Law Minister Anisul Haque, in the absence of Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal on Wednesday.
After the meeting, Cabinet Division Additional Secretary Abu Saleh Mostafa Kamal told reporters that eight proposals placed for approval at the meeting were given approval. Among the approved proposals 3 proposals were from the Ministry of Industries, 3 from Division of Power, one from the Division of Energy and Mineral Resources and one was from the Division of Secondary and Higher Education.
Elaborating on the approved fertilizer purchases, the Additional Secretary said the import of 25,000 metric tonnes of bulk granular (optional) urea fertilizer from Saudi Basic Industries Corporation (SABIC) was approved through a state-level agreement at a cost of 55.69 crore taka. SABIC is the Saudi Basic Industries Corporation one of the world's leading manufacturers of chemicals, fertilizers, plastics and metals.
In addition, Qatar Chemical and Petrochemical Marketing and Distribution Company (Muntaja) through a state-level agreement, 25,000 metric tons bulk prilled (Non-Urea Fertilizer Fertilizer) was approved at a cost of 55.56 crore taka.
The committee also approved the import of 30,000 metric tonnes of bagged granular urea fertilizer in the 8th lot out of the 650,000 metric tonnes of urea fertilizer contracted by Karnafuli Fertilizer Company Limited (KAFCO), Bangladesh at a cost of 57,50 crore taka.
