Veteran actor and lawmaker Suborna Mustafa has protested the reported harassment of a female college teacher for wearing a bindi, locally known as teep, by a policeman in the capital.

"Where in the constitution, which law of Bangladesh says that a woman cannot wear a teep?" Suborna asked, after taking the floor of the ongoing session of parliament on Sunday.

Suborna called the incident “a shameful display of eve-teasing by a member of a law enforcement agency” and also demanded action against the policeman involved.

According to reports, Lata Samaddar, a lecturer in Tejgaon College's theatre and media studies department, was on her way to work when she was reportedly verbally abused for wearing a teep on her forehead by a policeman at 8:30am on Saturday.

After she protested, the policeman threatened to run her over with his motorbike, she alleged.

Lata Samaddar filed a complaint with the Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station in this regard, mentioning that the incident happened in front of Shezan Point shopping mall in the capital’s Farmgate area.
