Nine people, including Awami League President Sheikh Hasina – who resigned from the post of prime minister and fled the country on August 5 – have been sued in the International Criminal Tribunal (ICT) on charges of committing crimes against humanity and genocide.

Supreme Court lawyer Gazi MH Tanim submitted a complaint in this regard to the ICT Investigating Agency on Wednesday afternoon, reports Amader Shomoy.

Tanim filed this complaint on behalf of Bulbul Kabir, the father of ninth-grade student Alif Ahmed Siam, who was shot dead in Savar. In the case, the nine people were accused of committing crimes against humanity and genocide in a bid to suppress the quota reform movement from July 15 to August 5.

Confirming the matter, ICT Investigating Agency Deputy Director Ataur Rahman told the media, “We have registered the complaint, and investigation on the case has begun. After completing the probe, we will submit a report to the tribunal chief prosecutor's office for further action.”

Aside from Hasina, the other accused in the case are – Awami League General Secretary and former road transport and bridges minister Obaidul Quader, former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, former state minister for posts, telecommunications and information technology Zunaid Ahmed Palak, former state minister for information Mohammad Ali Arafat, former IGP Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun, former DMP commissioner Habibur Rahman and DMP additional commissioner Harun-Or-Rashid.

The same charges have also been brought against the Awami League, Jubo League, Chhatra League and other affiliated bodies in the case.

Earlier on Wednesday, Legal Adviser of the interim government Asif Nazrul said those who committed massacres and shootings during the Boishommo Birodhi Chhatra Andolon movement, will be tried in the International Criminal Tribunal.
