The High Court (HC) today has appointed four amici curiae (friends of court) for expert opinions over the death of newborn twins after the mother and the babies were refused treatment.
HC bench comprising of Justice Md Nazrul Islam Talukder and Justice Ahmed Sohail passed the order on Wednesday. The bench also fixed January 18 for hearing in this matter.
The amici curiae are — Advocate ZI Khan Panna, Advocate Manzil Morshed, eminent jurist Dr Shahdeen Malik and a senior child specialist of Dhaka Medical College.
Earlier on November 2, the HC ordered Islami Bank Hospital, Dhaka Shishu Hospital and Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) to submit their explanations for refusing treatments to the newborns and the mother within 48 hours. The mother gave birth to twin newborn in a CNG-run three-wheeler on the way to hospital.
The same HC bench made the suo moto (voluntary) order after father of the twins Abdul Kalam Azad brought their bodies to the court premises and placed the issue before the bench for necessary order.
