The High Court today has commuted death penalty to life imprisonment of Russell Mia alias Russell Matubbar, in a murder case of Barisal University student Saoda Aktar Mallik who was stabbed to death on September 5, 2013.
The HC bench of Justice Krishna Debnath and Justice ASM Abdul Mobin passed the order on Monday after hearing a death reference and appeal in this case.
The lawyer of the accused Advocate Mohammad ShishirMonir confirmed the matter to The Business Post.
Earlier on June 01, 2015, a Barisal court handed down death penalty to Russell Mia for killing a first-year Barisal University student Saoda Aktar.
Condemned Russel Mia was the only man charged for the murder of 18-year-old girl Saoda Akhtar.
Barisal Sessions Judges Court Judge MdAnwarulHaque passed the order after concluding hearing of this case.
Russell Mia was a second-year management student of Barisal University, was involved in an affair with Saoda Akhtar who was a first-year student of accounting of the same university.
Later, Saoda Akhtar’s parents rebuked her severely after they learned about their relationship.
Saoda Akhtar tried to avoid Russel Mia for a month, but Russell Mia did not give up.
He stabbed the girl with a knife on the campus. Later, the victim died in the intensive care unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
The victim's mother Shahida Begum filed a case with Barisal Kotwali Police Station accusing Russel Mia and two or three anonymous others.
