The High Court (HC) today set February 22 for holding hearing on a rule asking as to why it shall not declared illegal the parliament membership of Laxmipur-2 lawmaker Mohammad Shahid Islam alias Kazi Papul.

A High Court division virtual bench of Justice Gobinda Chandra Tagore and Justice Mohammad Ullah passed the order today as lawyer Sheikh Awsafur Rahman placed the matter before the court for hearing.

“The court has set February 22 to hold hearing on the rule,” the lawyer said.

The High Court on August 20, 2020, issued the rule asking Election Commission (EC), EC Senior Secretary, National Parliament Secretariat Secretary, Laxmipur Deputy Commissioner and Kazi Papul to reply in four weeks as to why it shall not declare illegal Papul’s parliament membership.

The court came up with the order after holding hearing on a writ filed by one Abul Fayez Bhuiyan, a resident of Laxmipur and contested in 11th national parliament election from the same constituency as an independent candidate.

The petitioner in his writ said Papul has given false information regarding his educational qualification in his election affidavit.

Kazi Papul is now behind bars in Kuwait on charges of human trafficking and money laundering.
