HC issues injunction on Wasa’s tariff hike till August 10

The High Court (HC) has issued an injunction asking Dhaka Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (DWASA) not to charge consumers new tariff till August 10.

The HC bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim passed the order at a virtual hearing on Monday (June 22).

Supreme Court lawyer Advocate Tanvir Ahmed was present at the hearing in favor of the petition, while Attorney General Mahbubey Alam stood in favor of the state.

The petitioner said hiking water tariff is not only illegal but also a heartless act at a time when people are losing jobs and sources of income due to coronavirus pandemic.

Under the WASA’s new tariff ceiling, residential consumers will have to pay Tk 14.46 for each unit (1,000 liters) of water, which is Tk 2.89 or 24.97% more than the existing tariff of Tk 11.5.

Advocate Tanvir Ahmed filed the writ on June 15, .
