HC orders BRAC Bank to compensate Jaha Alam Tk 15 lac

The High Court (HC) on Wednesday ordered BRAC Bank to pay 15 lakh taka as compensation to Jaha Alam, who was in jail for three years after being wrongfully accused in several corruption cases.

HC bench of Justice FRM Nazmul Ahasan and Justice KM Kamrul Kader passed the verdict.

Confirming the matter to The Business Post, Anti-Corruption Commission’s (ACC) lawyer Khurshid Alam Khan said the money has to be paid within 30 days upon receiving the HC order.

Earlier on September 29, the HC deferred its judgement on the rule over the compensation to Jaha Alam until Wednesday (September 30).

On September 23, the HC fixed September 29 to deliver its judgment on the rule over the compensation to Jaha Alam.

On February 12, the HC issued a rule asking the government to explain as to why directives should not be given to provide compensation to Tangail Jute Mill worker Jaha Alam in the loan default case filed by the ACC.

The case had been kept pending for hearing.

On April 10, 2012, the ACC filed a case with Dhanmondi Police Station for embezzling 18 crore taka of Sonali Bank.

On February 28, 2015, the ACC submitted charge sheet against Jaha Alam.

During the investigation, Nazrul Islam alias Safdar Hossain alias Sagar, who was arrested in this connection from Manikganj district, gave a confessional statement with detail of misappropriating 20 crore taka from 10 banks.

ACC submitted a charge sheet against Aminul Haque Sardar, son of Shamsul Haque of Manikganj district in the case. Later, Aminul surrendered before the court on April 1, last year and since then he is in prison.

Jaha Alam was freed from jail on February 4 after the HC acquitted him off 26 cases in which charges had been pressed against him.

The jute mill worker had been in jail since February 2016 in ACC cases for misappropriating Sonali Bank money. The real accused, Abu Salek, is absconding.

Jaha Alam was released after the HC issued a suo moto order and asked the ACC to submit case documents in the form of affidavits.
