The High Court has refused to grant bail to Md Mostafa Kamal, a suspended Engineer of Public Works Department in three separate cases filed over corruption in purchasing furniture and other household items for Green City housing project under Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant (RNPP) Project in Pabna.
The High Court bench of Justice Md Nazrul Islam Talukder and Justice Ahmed Sohel passed the order on Tuesday after hearing three bail petitions filed by accused.
However, the High Court bench also issued three rules asking the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) and government to explain in three weeks why Md Mostafa Kamal should not be granted bail in those cases.
ACC lawyer Advocate Khurshid Alam Khan confirmed the matter to the Business Post.
Advocate Humayun Kabir Bulbul appeared for the accused while Advocate Khurshid Alam Khan represented the ACC.
Earlier on December 12 last year, ACC arrested 13 government officials including former Public Works Department Executive Engineer of Pabna Masudul Alam, for their suspected involvement with graft while purchasing furniture and other household items for Green City housing project under RNPP Project.
Later, ACC filed the cases at its Pabna District office against Md Mostafa Kamal and several others on charges of irregularities in supplying furniture and household items to the officials of RNPP Project.
The other accused are - Deputy Assistant Engineers Suman Kumar Nandi, Md Jahidul Kabir, Md Shafiqul Islam, Mohammad Abu Sayed, and Md Rowshan Ali. Deputy Divisional Engineers: Md Mostafa Kamal, Ahmed Sajjad Khan, Mohammad Tahajjud Hossain. Assistant Engineers: Md Tarek Khan, Md Aminul Islam and Contractors Asif Hossain and Shahadat Hossain.
A total of four cases were filed in connection with the graft.
According to reports, each pillow was shown to have cost 5,957 taka with a lifting charge of 760 taka while an electric stove was shown to have been bought for 7,747 taka with an additional lifting charge of 6,650 taka. In addition, the purchase price of an electric kettle was reportedly 5,313 taka and the lifting cost was 2,945 taka. Similarly, the purchase price of a room-cleaning machine was shown as 12,018 taka with a lifting charge of 6,650 taka.
