HC rules over increase of jail term to ex-GCC mayor

The High Court today issued a rule asking the government to explain why the sentence of former Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) Mayor MA Mannan should not be increased.

The HC bench of Justice Md Nazrul Islam Talukder and Justice Mohiuddin Shamim issued the rule on Tuesday after hearing a review petition filed by Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) in this regard.

Confirming the matter to the Business Post, Deputy Attorney General (DAG) AKM Amin Uddin Manik said that the court also fixed April 11 for the next hearing in this matter.

Advocate Khurshid Alam Khan stood in favour of ACC while DAG AKM Amin Uddin Manik represented the state in the hearing before the court.

Earlier on 18 November last year, MA Mannan was sentenced to one year imprisonment in connection with a case filed by the ACC for embezzling Taka 50 lakh in fake vouchers.

At the same time he was fined TK 50 lakh and the court sentenced him to three more months in jail in default.

According to the allegations in the case, while MA Mannan was the Mayor of Gazipur City Corporation (August 18, 2013 to February 2, 2015), he allegedly fraudulently showed 999 vouchers of grants and expenses and also embezzled more than TK 49 lakh one thousand from the poor fund.
