The High Court has asked authorities concerned to submit a report in writing, by November 14, on facilities being provided to 1,987 death row convicts in different jails across the country.

A High Court division bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Mostafizur Rahman passed the order after holding a further hearing on a writ petition filed in this regard.

The court came up with the order as Advocate Shishir Manir, who moved the writ before the court, informed about a report filed by the Department of Prisons. Attorney General AM Amin Uddin argued for the state during the hearing.

Advocate Manir filed the wit on behalf of three death row convicts, who have been kept in condemned cells in Chattogram, Sylhet and Cumilla Jails.

"According to the report, currently there are 1,987 death row convicts in different jails across the country. Of these, 1,933 are male and the rest are female. On the other hand, there are 2,599 condemned cells in different prisons in the country," said Advocate Manir.

The Supreme Court lawyer on September 3 filed the writ, challenging the legality of the decision of keeping death row convicts in the condemned cells before their cases are disposed of once and for all.
