The High Court will deliver its verdict on Thursday on whether Mohammad Zahangir Alam will get back his mayoral post of Gazipur City Corporation (GCC).

The High Court bench of Justice Zafar Ahmed and Justice Md Bashir Ullah fixed the date on Tuesday after the end of the hearing on the rule issued in this regard.

On August 23 last year, the court issued the rule asking officials concerned with the government to explain why the decision of suspending Zahangir Alam from the post of GCC mayor should not be declared illegal.

The High Court came up with the rule following a writ petition filed by Zahangir Alam on August 14, 2022, challenging the legality of his suspension order.

On November 25, 2021, Zahangir Alam was suspended from the post of GCC mayor while he was also expelled from the Awami League for making derogatory comments about the martyrs of the Liberation War.
