The hearing on the writ petition seeking the High Court order not to fire on students and for the release of six coordinators from the DB custody was not held on Wednesday.

The hearing was scheduled to be held before a High Court bench comprising Justice Mostafa Zaman Islam and Justice SM Masud Hossain Dolon.

Lawyers and journalists gathered at the bench in the morning in anticipation of the hearing.

However, it was later informed that the hearing would not be held as the junior judge of the bench was on leave.

The court authorities could not confirm when the next hearing would be held.

A writ petition was filed with the High Court (HC) on Monday seeking its directive to the law enforcement agencies not to shoot protesters from today and the release of six quota coordinators from the custody of Detective Branch (DB).

Lawyers Manjur Al Matin Pritom and Aynunnahar Siddika Lipy submitted the petition with the HC bench of Justice Mustafa Zaman Islam and Justice SM Masud Hossain.

Cabinet secretary, home secretary, inspector general of police and the army chief were made respondents to the writ, Assistant Attorney General Anis Ul Mawa said.

After the initial hearing on the writ petition on Monday, the HC set Wednesday for further hearing and passing an order in this regard later.

Lawyer Z I Khan Panna, Barrister Sara Hossain, Barrister Anik R Haque and others representing the petitioners were present during the hearing while Additional Attorney Generals Mehedi Hasan Chowdhury and Sheikh Mohammed Morshed stood for the state.

On Sunday night, Nahid Islam, a coordinator of the quota reform movement, announced in a video message, while under DB custody, the withdrawal of their protest programme.

Despite this announcement, other coordinators of the quota movement from different universities including Dhaka University issued statements vowing to continue their protests until their nine-point demands are met.
