Various activities at the Chittagong port have faced severe disruptions due to the heavy rainfall that began Thursday night and continued onto the following day.

As such, the loading and unloading of goods to and from the mother vessels moored at the port’s outer anchorage became completely halted all day Friday.

According to the Water Transportation Cell (WTC), which operates the lighterage ships in the port, goods have stopped being unloaded from the mother vessels waiting at the outer anchor since Thursday night due to the inclement weather.

On Thursday, a total of 20 lighter vessels were assigned to cargo unloading.

“Due to rain and bad weather, 10 ships assigned to unload cargo from the mother vessels on Friday also failed to carry out their tasks,” said Mohammad Ranju, a WTC official.

According to port sources, there are 40 lighter ships operational in the port.

The Patenga Meteorological Office recorded 40.8 mm of rainfall in Chattogram till 3pm on Friday.

Meanwhile, the meteorological office has also forecast moderate to heavy rain in the port city for the next 24 hours.
