Heavy rain puts Dhaka streets under water

Relentless rain, light to moderate and torrential, since Tuesday night has flooded many streets in Dhaka causing heavy traffic congestion.

In some areas of the city, knee-deep water submerged busy roads with stagnant water.

Office-goers and other regular commuters suffered reaching their destinations due to waterlogged roads and long traffic forced many to wade through flooded streets.

Just three hours of rainfall, from 6:00am to 9:00am, was enough to shatter the tall claims of monsoon preparedness made by the city's municipal corporations, as several areas faced waterlogging problems.

Rampura, Badda and Mirpur were some of the worst-hit areas in the city. Post-showers, many people were seen wading through ankle-deep water in these areas to reach their destination.

According to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department, the city received 85 millimetres of rainfall on Tuesday.

Mohammad Aftab Uddin, a meteorologist, said, “The capital is likely to receive light to moderate showers on Wednesday too."

The weather forecast till 6:00pm on Tuesday said that light to moderate rain or thundershowers with temporary gusts are likely in many parts of Dhaka, Rangpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Khulna, Barisal, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions.

Several river ports in the country have been asked to hoist cautionary signal number 1.

Met office forecast said a slight change may occur in the weather in the next two days.

The weather forecast for the inland river ports of the country is that temporarily strong winds with rain or thunderstorms at a speed of 45-60kmph from the north-west may flow over Rangpur, Dinajpur, Rajshahi, Pabna, Bogura, Tangail, Mymensingh, Faridpur, Dhaka, Jashore, Kushtia, Khulna, Barisal, Patuakhali, Noakhali, Cumilla, Chattogram, Cox's Bazar and Sylhet region.

Until 6:00pm on Monday, significant rainfall has been recorded Netrokona with 97mm rain, 68mm in Rajarhat, 66mm in Barishal, 53mm in Dimla, 46mm in Satkhira, 42mm in Sitakunda, 43mm in Dhaka, and 24mm in Sandwip and Madaripur.

The highest temperature recorded in the country on Monday was in Rangamati at 35.6 degrees Celcius and the lowest in Tangail at 23.3 degrees.
