A heavy downpour flooded many streets and low-lying areas in Dhaka, disrupting normal life and creating havoc on daily commute since Saturday morning.

In the wake of a heavy shower, some busy thoroughfares of the city went under knee-deep water, thereby causing a perennial gridlock.

The city streets were further down under water when it rained again in the afternoon aided by gusty wind.

The office workers had to endure great sufferings amid waterlogging as they could not reach their destinations on time. Long traffic forced many to wade through ankle-deep water in Rampura, Badda and Mirpur areas to reach their workplaces.

The ongoing road renovation and construction under different projects including the much-hyped Metro Rail across the city added to the woes of the city dwellers.

The meteorological department in its weather forecast said a low was lying over the West Bengal and adjoining area of Bangladesh, extending up to North Bay causing the rainfall.

According to the forecast, light to moderate rain and thunder showers accompanied by temporary gusty or squally wind is likely to occur at many places in Dhaka, Chattogram, Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions and at places in Rajshahi and Rangpur divisions and at one or two places in Khulna and Barishal divisions with moderately heavy to heavy rainfalls across the country in the next 24 hours.

It further said mild heat wave was sweeping over Dhaka, Rajshahi and Khulna divisions and the districts of Rangpur, Dinajpur, Nilphamari and Chandpur.

The day temperature may fall slightly and night temperature may remain nearly unchanged over the country, according to the Met office.
